About the Twingo

The unusually named Renault Twingo is a small compact city-friendly hatchback car first released back in 1992 and still going strong today in its third generation. The interesting and unique name of the car is a portmanteau of 3 words: twist, swing, and tango.

First-generation models were powered by 1-liter or 1.2-liter petrol engines, and were only made as a 3-door hatchback. Larger 1.6-liter engines were introduced for the second generation models, as well as a 1.5-liter diesel engine and a 5-speed automatic transmission.

The latest model was released back in 2014 and is built as a 5-door hatchback with a rear mid-engine RWD overall layout. It is also more compact than its second-generation counterpart, being roughly 10mm shorter. The rear-engine layout allows for greater cabin space, which is handy in a compact city car, but does so at the cost of trunk space.

Third-generation models also perform much better than earlier Renault Twingo cars when it comes to safety. The 2014 Renault Twingo managed to score 4 starts on its Euro NCAP test results. That’s up from 3 stars for adult occupant safety and 2 stars for pedestrian safety on the first-generation Twingo.

It has been a well-received car over the years, with the model winning “City Car of the Year” in 2014 in the UK when the newest model was released there. Its small stature and ultra-low emissions ratings make it ideal for European cities with their narrow streets and tighter parking arrangements.

In 2019, an electric version of the Renault Twingo was also announced, known charmingly as the Twingo Z.E. which stands for Zero Emissions. It was first unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in February 2020 as the second electric offering from Renault after the Zoe.
