About the Kadjar

The Renault Kadjar is a compact crossover SUV that was first unveiled in 2015 at the Geneva Motor Show. It was developed alongside other crossover models like the Nissan Qashqai as part of the overall Renault-Nissan strategic partnership.

It’s marketed as a family-friendly 5-door crossover SUV, larger than the Renault Captur, but smaller than the new Renault Arkana. It has only enjoyed a short life within the range, but still achieved decent sales numbers, particularly in Europe where before the pandemic it consistently averaged over 100,000+ unit sales annually.

A wide range of powertrains have been available for the Renault Kadjar, the smallest is a 1.2L 4-cylinder turbo unit that was available from 2015 to 2018, as well as a 1.6L petrol that managed up to 161-hp and 177 lb-ft of torque. Following that, the main petrol units were switched for 1.3L units in Europe and a 2.0L unit in China. Diesel powertrains were also available.

The name “Kadjar” may appear somewhat unusual at first, but according to Renault it's the amalgamation of “Kad” which is linked to quad, or a go-anywhere type of rugged and ready vehicle; while “Jar” is reminiscent of the French word for agility. The name has also been linked to the French spelling for the Qajar (Kadjar) shahs of Persia.

One of the very attractive features of the Kadjar for many buyers was its safety rating, consistently receiving the 5-star Euro NCAP rating. When you climb up the trim ladder, you can find many great safety features, including lane departure warning, speed alert, traffic sign recognition, as well as a blind-spot warning system. It also came with reversing sensors and a reversing camera.

The Renault Kadjar will enjoy its final model year in 2022 before it is ultimately replaced by the Renault Austral series, which was unveiled in March 2022 and will begin production for the 2023 model year.
