About the Sprinter
The Mercedes Benz Sprinter is a light commercial van sold under the Mercedes, Dodge, Freightliner and Volkswagen badges.
Replacing the popular but aging Mercedes TN van that had been on sale since 1977, the Sprinter began sales in 1995 with the move to Northern America in 2001. Initially in the USA, the Sprinter was built under the name Freightliner up until 2003, when it was replaced by ‘Dodge.’
Manufacturing took place in Dusseldorf, Germany and was reassembled in Gaffney, South Carolina. To take advantage of the loophole in the ‘chicken tax’ (a tax applied to the shipping of whole, large commercial vehicles), Mercedes sent over the parts to America for assembly.
2006 saw in the second generation and was voted ‘van of the year’ 12 months later. Two roof heights were available, 60.6 inches and 72.4 inches coupled with three varying lengths; 233.3 inches, 274.2 inches and 289.8 inches. New assistance safety systems were introduced in 2013 to include collision avoidance, crosswind stabilization, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning and adaptive high beam control. This new update was coupled with a fairly aggressive angular styling and a new four-wheel drive variant, the Sprinter 4x4. Up to 5 body styles were available, including; a passenger vehicle, a crew van, a cargo van and a hybrid mix of 2 rows and passenger.
The third generation was marketed more to commercial buyers rather than private, and made popular its minibus version. This minibus replaced the metal side panels with windows and a number of trim levels such as the Transfer, Travel, Inkanyezi and City.
This Mercedes Sprinter remains an extremely popular choice amongst small business owners and large corporate companies alike, it received praise for its speed, low cab noise and quick acceleration.
