About the GLC

The Mercedes-Benz GLC replaced the GLK-Class SUV as the main compact luxury crossover offering in the company’s lineup. It was first introduced in 2015 and released for the 2016 model year, and as of 2022 has entered its second generation.

The first-generation GLC models were sold either as a 5-door SUV model or a 5-door coupe SUV, and were built on the Mercedes-Benz MRA platform. Powertrain options were fairly generous for the GLC, including 3 gasoline options, 3 hybrids, and 3 diesel engines. Though not all were available in every market, the GLC nonetheless reflected a diverse power offering.

The most common and standard specification was the gasoline GLC 300 with 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo engine outputting up to 242-hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. The coupe version had the same power ratings.

Besides the sleek, luxurious looks of the GLC, Mercedes-Benz also offered a generous package of standard features in the first-generation GLC SUV models, including (but not limited to): dual-zone climate control, cruise control, Bluetooth, multiple airbags including side-curtain and knee airbags, and 8-way power-adjustable driver and front passenger seats.

The first-generation GLC models received a facelift in 2019, which included unveiling a new coupe variant. Besides some exterior styling changes, the main new update was changing the MBUX operating system for the infotainment offering, which included the facility of voice activation using the phrase “Hey Mercedes.”

The facelifted model also got some new engine offerings, a newly designed steering wheel, and a 12.3-inch digital cockpit which helped Mercedes-Benz SUVs compete with German rivals such as Audi who have been making a digital cockpit the standard in many of their vehicles over the past few years.

The second-generation models were unveiled in June 2022, and are set to begin production for the 2023 model year. It is known to be larger, and will offer more hybrid options, including a diesel plug-in hybrid option.
