About the ATS
The Cadillac ATS is a compact 4-door sedan car manufactured from 2012 to 2019 and was first released for the 2013 model year. When new, it was marketed in the $30,000-40,000 price range. All models fell under a single generation, but there was a minor refresh in 2015, and some additional minor updates in 2016.
The ATS was originally developed as a way to offer a sedan larger than something like the BMW 3 Series, but priced at the same level as the 3 Series. As a concept, it seemed solid, but it proved somewhat unsuccessful as a strategy. As it turns out, most buyers liked the current price-to-size ratio that existed in the market.
It was first built in 2 versions, a 4-door sedan and a 2-door coupe. The changes in 2015 and 2016 saw the styling of the sedan models come closer to that of the coupe models. In 2014, a longer wheelbase version was also made exclusively for the Chinese market and was badged as the ATS-L.
The US market also received the ATS-V, a high-specification version that carried a 3.6L twin-turbo V6 engine. It could get from 0-60 in just 3.7 seconds.
Available powertrains included a base-level 2.0L turbo 4-cylinder unit delivering 272-hp and paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, as well as a more powerful 3.6L V6 that delivered up to 335-hp. A 6-speed manual transmission was also available for the drivetrain.
One of the key changes made in 2016 was to add automatic start-stop technology to the 2.0L turbo and the 3.6L V6 powertrain options that carried the 8-speed transmission. At the time, GM made the claim that this start-stop tech could reduce CO2 emissions by up to 6 percent.
Initial sales of the ATS were fairly strong, and were maintained at 20,000+ units annually in the US during the update years 2015-2016. However, from 2017 dwindling sales in the US saw the model dropped by GM.
