About the 147

A small family car, the Alfa Romeo 147 was extremely popular having been voted ‘European car of the year’ in 2001.

Sold for a decade between 2000 to 2010, the 147 was launched at the Turin Motor Show and replaced the Alfa Romeo 145 and 146 hatchbacks. With two petrol engines, the 1.6-liter and 3.2-liter, and one diesel, the 1.9-liter, the 147 had paddle gears and just two trim levels, the Turismo and Lusso (names echoing the UK's version of the Alfa Romeo 159).

The 147 was the very first Alfa Romeo to have dual-zone climate control, and won awards for its sleek and modern styling. 2004 saw a facelift which would bring it more in line with other cars in Alfa Romeos line of vehicles such as the new 159. The update benefitted from newly styled rear lights, headlights, a front grille more suited to the iconic ‘V’ and a newly fitted interior.

A limited edition version was built entitled the ‘Ducatti’ Corse in 2007 and shown at the Bologna Motor Show and was created to celebrate the Australian MotoGP rider Casey Stoner’s championship win. Alfa Romeo at the time was the official car supplier to the Ducati racing team. Entitled a ‘hot hatch’, this vehicle had a 3.2-liter V6 GTA engine that produced 247 bhp, and 5,029 were built with a 6-speed manual transmission and wide body.

The 147 received mixed reviews for its handling, critics would point out that it was light, and the seats were unsupportive with extremely low internal space when compared to other vehicles in its class.
