About the Punto

The Punto is a supermini car built by the Italian car manufacturer Fiat between the years 1993 to 2018. The first generation (codenamed project 176) replaced the Fiat Uno, a vehicle that had long been ageing, and quickly gained success.

Two years after its release, the Punto was awarded ‘Europe’s car of the year’ beating the VW Polo. There were a number of engine configurations, a 1.1-liter petrol, a 1.2-liter petrol and a 1.7-liter diesel amongst others.

A convertible version was created with a canvas roof and was built at Bertone and not at the main Fiat factory. The roof was powered electrically and at the time the Punto convertible was one of the cheapest cabriolets globally. The trim levels were referred to as ELX and SX and between 1994 and 1999, 55,000 units were produced.

The second generation began in 1999 (codenamed project 188) and debuted at the Frankfurt motor show. The new models had been clearly updated aesthetically to show a more modern look. In contrast to this, the 2nd generation Punto carried the retro round Fiat badge that had not been used in a number of years. Fiat discontinued the 1.1-liter and 1.4-liter petrol engines due to poor emission tests.

2003 saw a facelift with the addition of power steering and that year marked the production of the 5 millionth Punto. The release of the Grande Punto forced the original Punto to change its name to ‘Punto classic’ and here, the trims available had been extended to include the S, SX, ELX and HLX.

In 2005 The Grande Punto was altered and built off the Fiat small platform which was used jointly with Opel and General Motors. 2009 saw a facelift, the vehicle was renamed the ‘Evo’ at this point and had a newly redesigned front end.
