About the Megane

The Renault Megane was first released back in 1995 for the 1996 model year as the successor to the outgoing Renault 19 model. It was classed as a “small family car,” being larger than a regular hatchback, but also with a sedan, wagon and coupe variants to suit different tastes and market needs.

After its release for the 1996 model year, a minivan variant even became available in late 1996 called the Renault Megane Scenic, which ran until 1999 before having its name changed to just Scenic and gaining its own model line.

While the first-generation Megane models looked quite a lot like the Renault 19 predecessors, the second-generation models --- Megane II --- received significant design changes, in particular to the rear-end design of the car. The sloping roofline of the previous model was removed and replaced with a flat top, near-vertical rear window and then a trunk and rear bumper that jutted out more.

Megane II sales were through the roof, topping the French sales of the 2003 year with almost 200,000 units sold. It also enjoyed popularity in the UK where it was the 4th most popular car in 2005, and 5th in 2006.

The third generation arrived in the 2009 model year and brought more changes, including an evening out and rounding off of the rear-end design, and also the introduction of a cabriolet model. Its latest models, the Megane IV, were released in 2016.

The latest models include petrol, diesel, and, from 2020, even plug-in hybrid (PHEV) options, not to mention a number of special high-spec editions like the GT Version, RS Version and the RS Trophy-R Version powered by a 1.8L turbo petrol engine. That’s a far cry from the 1.0L inline-3 that was standard across most regular Megane models.

Megane models received their latest update in 2020, which included some nice tech updates, including a 9.3-inch touchscreen for the interior.
