About the Kangoo

The Renault Kangoo is part of a family of multi-purpose vehicles and minivan-style vehicles that have been built by French giant Renault since 1997. Consistently popular across 3 generations, the Kangoo has spawned a number of different variants, including the new all-electric Renault Kangoo Z.E., which as of December 2019 is the top-selling electric light commercial vehicle in Europe since launching in 2011.

The first-generation Kangoo models were produced from 1997 to 2007 in Europe, and from 1998 to 2018 in the Latin American market. It also spawned a 4WD version called the Trekka in 2002. Observant car enthusiasts will notice the similarities between the Kangoo and the Nissan Kubistar. In fact, they were differently badged versions of the same vehicle.

The second-generation models were launched in 2007 and were offered in 3 different configurations: Express, Compact, and Express Maxi. The Express Maxi had a longer wheelbase, while the Compact offered a shorter version. All of these variants were available as a commercial light vehicle, or as a passenger vehicle.

As a commercial light vehicle the Kangoo proved both capable and affordable. The long-wheelbase Express Maxi version could handle up to 1,819-lbs of payload, and featured up to 9.5 feet (2.9m) of usable floor. Powertrains ranged from an 112-hp 1.2L engine, to a 1.6L 105-hp unit, or a 1.5L 109-hp unit.

As briefly mentioned above, the 2011 model year saw the release of the electric version, the Kangoo Z.E., which was powered by a 22-kWh battery initially delivering just 110 miles of range. This was upgraded to a 33-kWh unit in 2017, boosting range to 170 miles.

In the 2021 model year, a third generation of Kangoo models was released based on an all-new platform called CMF-CD, which was jointly created by Renault and Nissan as part of their ongoing strategic partnership. The latest generation is also known as the Nissan Townstar when in its Nissan badging.
