About the Paceman
The Mini Paceman was a fairly short-lived subcompact luxury crossover SUV manufactured between 2012 and 2016, and sold from the 2013 model year until being finally discontinued in 2016.
The Paceman shared a fair amount of DNA with the Mini Hardtop, such as its 3-door body style, but in driving dynamics and drivetrain offerings, it was closer to the Mini Countryman. In fact, its proximity to the Countryman was the main reason for BMW making the decision to cut the Paceman from the lineup, since it was considered superfluous by 2016.
Engine options on the Mini Paceman include a 1.6L inline 4 on the Cooper trim, a 1.6L turbocharged 4-cylinder unit for the Cooper S trim, and a 1.6-liter diesel for the Cooper D. There was an additional 2-liter diesel unit for the Cooper D Automatic.
The Cooper S powertrain delivered up to 181-hp, but best in the lineup was the John Cooper Works, which could deliver up to 218-hp. Many opted for at least the Cooper S as the base engine was considered rather lackluster when it came to acceleration.
While the Paceman only enjoyed a rather short production lifespan, the model endures in popularity in the used market for its distinctive looks and athletic driving dynamics. Besides the powerful engine options, the Paceman also featured a great sport-tuned suspension that helped deliver fantastic on-road handling for those who love to really drive their cars on tricky roads.
The optional AWD (All4) technology also helped improve traction, and really made the Mini Paceman feel as though it was positively glued to the road surface. At the same time, the interior delivered many of the same brand-consistent features that people loved about other Mini models, so going for a unique exterior didn’t mean losing the familiar interior.
