About the XC90

The XC90 is a mid-size SUV and the largest model in the Volvo lineup, it is also one of the oldest models available today as it was released in 2002.

It quickly saw success after its release when it received North American Car of the Year 2003 and Motor Trend’s Sport/Utility of the Year 2003.

Competition for the XC90 generally comes from the larger luxury SUVs on the market like the Audi Q7, BMW X5, and the Land Rover Discovery.

Like all Volvos, the XC90 has always had a strong emphasis on features like safety, luxury, comfort, and capability.

A hint to the XC90s capability as an SUV is the option for four-wheel-drive, although there have also been front-wheel-drive models.

The first generation of the XC90 was released as a 5-door crossover SUV. Styling cues for the first generation alluded to the XC90’s offroad ability like the black plastic exterior trim.

The first-generation XC90 received a number of facelifts and updates in the years 2007, 2009, 2010, and 2012. Apart from a significant facelift in 2007, these were relatively small updates.

There have been a number of engine options for the two generations of the full-size SUV, although most have been on the larger side.

First-generation petrol engines ranged from a turbocharged 2.5-liter to a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8. Diesel offerings included an array of 2.4-liter turbodiesels.

The second generation was released in 2015 with a host of changes to the previous XC90. One of the most significant changes was the downsizing of all engine options.

All engines were substituted for more efficient 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol and diesel options.

The 2020 model received another update in the form of the XC90 Recharge, a plug-in hybrid variant, this is known as the T8 model.
