About the C70

Initially a coupe with a soft top and then replaced with a hard top, the Volvo C70 could seat 3 passengers plus the driver and had 2 doors.

First shown at the 1996 Paris Motorshow, the vehicle was released first in Europe in 1997 and then a year later in 1998 in America.

Designed by Peter Horbury, the C70 paved the way for a more modern Volvo, ending the uncool boxy aesthetic of previous decades.

As Volvo's first luxury coupe for a long time, the C70 strove to combine a practical family car with a sporty cabriolet.

Built upon a derived version of the 850 Platform (also found under the S70 and V70), the C70 was manufactured in Uddevalla in Sweden and had a heated rear window, safety cage and side airbags. Four colors were available along with an automatic transmission.

Unfortunately, it was generally agreed that there was poor visibility and a relatively weak structure when compared to other convertibles.

A C70 Collection Special Edition was released in February 2004, available in a color Volvo described as ‘titanium grey pearl,’ this model had soft leather throughout with 17-inch alloy wheels and ‘luxury floor mats.’

For the first 10 years, over 72,000 units were produced with the soft top version making up a third of sales.

Volvo first unveiled the new C70 at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2006, the obvious modification was made to the roof, which was now a three-fold hard top that could collapse in under 30 seconds when the vehicle was stationary. When the roof was extended, the boot space totaled 13 cubic feet, and when lowered, 7 cubic feet. Securing its reputation as a safe car, Volvo installed door-mounted side impact protection, which could inflate upwards upon impact.

Following the break up of the joint venture between Volvo and the company Pininfarina Sverige, the C70 ceased production in 2013.

It was never officially replaced but the closest alternative that came after this car was the luxurious Polestar 1.
