About the Passat

For many years now, the Volkswagen Passat has been regarded as the “affordable” high-end sedan, boasting decent craftsmanship, a nice executive profile, efficiency and reliability. In its latest form, the Passat remains all of these things; a well-built, spacious and accessible car with a starting price well under the $30,000 mark.

The truth is that the VW Passat is neither the most exciting car in the world nor even in the VW range. Where it shines is in its build quality and dependability. The interior is pleasant and comfortable, the outside reminiscent of a more budget-friendly Audi A-Series sedan car.

Despite lacking some of the design flairs of its competitors like the Kia K5, the Passat nonetheless comes in 3 trim levels to suit different budgets and needs:, SE, R-Line, and Limited Edition. The standard powertrain is a 2.0L 4-cylinder unit outputting up to 174-hp and 206 lb-ft of torque and paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Both the exterior and interior match in their clean, functional and utilitarian lines. This is a car built for maximum universal appeal. The interior is among the most spacious of any in its class, but it does deliver this --- especially the roomy back seat with more than 39 inches of legroom --- at the expense of some cargo space, which is cut down to just under 16 cubic feet.

It’s well equipped with good safety features, including automatic emergency braking, rear-view camera, and tire pressure monitoring system. Climbing to the R-Line or higher adds attractive 19-inch alloys, hands-free trunk opening, sport leather seats, parking assist, and a Fender premium audio system.

Whether used as an executive sedan to project professionalism and success, or as a family sedan, or both, the VW Passat is one of those quality vehicles that can be all things to all people. Perhaps it lacks true flair or finesse, but it oozes reliability.
