About the Arteon

The Volkswagen Arteon is VW’s top-end sedan car that competes alongside the Toyota Avalon, Nissan Maxima and even the Dodge Charger. It’s the pricier of those models starting at more than $41,000, but with upgrades in recent years to the Arteon engines and styling, the model is now also more of the performance model among these cars.

The newest Arteon is powered by a VW 4-cylinder 2.0L turbocharged engine paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch performance automatic transmission. The 7-speed unit gets VW’s direct-shift technology, which greatly closes the performance gap between manuals and automatics. The engine outputs up to 300-hp, and AWD is available on the SEL trim and up.

When you combine the AWD with the standard adaptive suspension, the VW Arteon is capable of smooth and controlled riding regardless of the road it’s on. It steers as precisely as a Golf GTI, which feels odd at first when you remember you’ve driving VW’s top sports sedan car.

High-spec and high horsepower it may be, but the Arteon still delivers up to 22-mpg in the city and 32-mpg on the highway. With efficiency, you also get a great level of elegance with a pleasing interior resplendent with high-quality materials and virtually no cheap plastic. What’s more, if you ever thought that the sibling sedan the VW Passat had a roomy back seat, then you should try the Arteon, offering 40.2 inches of legroom --- almost as much as there is in the front.

The large hatchback rear end offers 27 cubic feet of cargo space, and owners also can enjoy heated/ventilated seats, driver massage feature, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and an available Harman Kardon premium audio system. Any way that you look at it, the Arteon is a great and still fairly affordable sports sedan option. However, it faces stiff competition, especially from Korean OEMs like Kia with its K5 and Stinger models offering similar levels of features often for a better price point.
