About the Land Cruiser

The Land Cruiser is the name given to a series of 4-wheel drive vehicles manufactured by the Japanese company Toyota.

Over all their cars, the Land Cruiser is the longest-running model with over ten million sold worldwide. The very first Land Cruiser went on sale in 1951, creating a hard-topped, comfortable station wagon with a cab chassis. Emphasis was placed on its reliability and longevity, the attributes of which were especially appreciated in Australia.

Toyota began testing their vehicle in the outback, making the assumption that if it could cope with this demanding and perilous terrain, then it would pretty much survive anywhere. It picked up accolades here too, one of which was for the ‘best body on frame four-wheel drive.’ Toyota sells this vehicle worldwide, but its popularity varies wildly, for example, 40,000 models are sold annually in Australia compared to only 3,000 in the USA.

Originally created for the Imperial Japanese Army, the concept was inspired by the American Willys MB Jeep. When Japan occupied the Philippines, soldiers discovered this Jeep, seized it and shipped it back to Japan with a view to reverse engineer and improve upon it for their own campaign.

After years of refinement, the name changed, J100 to the 100 & 105, continuing the latter into the 1980s which featured coil suspended solid axles (front and rear) and a straight 6 petrol and diesel engines. This particular model was successful in Africa, Australasia, Russia and South Africa. Toyota made history in 2002 with their brand-new technology ‘Night View.’ This was the first active automotive night vision system; it used headlight projectors emitting infrared light as if it were a high beam headlight; the camera records ahead and then projects the image on the lower half of the windscreen.

2021 saw a new Land Cruiser built on the GA-F platform and efforts were made to lower the overall weight and increase the rigidity. To give it wider appeal, Toyota decided to cease production of the V8. To this day, the military still use this vehicle alongside the equally durable Toyota Hilux.
