About the FJ Cruiser

The Toyota FJ Cruiser is a mid-sized SUV brought to the market in 2006. It is a standout in the range mainly due to its rugged, retro styling.

This FJ Cruiser was released as a concept car in 2003 at the North American International Auto Show, and due to the largely positive response from journalists and consumers alike, Toyota decided to have their teamwork on creating a saleable vehicle.

By 2005, Toyota was able to showcase the FJ Cruiser (now ready for manufacture) again, at the North American International Auto Show. Built by Toyotas subsidiary, Hino Motors in Hamura, Japan, it shares numerous attributes with the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. It was actually discontinued in Japan in 2017 after a last-ditch attempt to boost sales by bringing out a ‘Final Edition.’

Toyota wanted to expand its Land Cruiser line into luxury SUVs (without losing their offroad capabilities). Due to Toyotas FJ Cruiser display at the Detroit Auto Show, Voodoo blue became the vehicle's signature color. Its bold iconic styling continued to be a hit throughout the decade despite hard competition from the Cadillac Sixteen and Dodge’s Tomahawk.

The new FJ Cruiser has taken visual cues from the original FJ40, namely, its boxy aesthetic, short wheelbase and front grille and headlights.

This FJ Cruiser sits in between the RAV4 and the Highlander in terms of size. It has 9.6 inches of ground clearance and can achieve 60 mph in 7.8 seconds.

After the IIHS safety testing, the FJ Cruiser scored ‘good’ for moderate-overlap frontal offset, side-impact and roof-strength. Due to the new retro styling, sales were excellent initially in the American market (56,225 units sold in 2006), however, sales took a huge dive in the three years following with a total of only 12,000 sold.
