About the smart forfour

As one of the most recognizable cars on the road, the ForFour is a small 4-passenger city car built by the Smart company. Smart’s history is full of numerous collaborations and continual evolution, currently, it’s named ‘Smart Automobile Co. Ltd’ and was a joint venture between Mercedes Benz and Zhejian Geely Holding Group. Originally, Smart was founded in 1994 by Micro Compact Car AG who took direction from the Swiss company Swatch.

The Smart ForFour was built with a front-end engine that shared the same makeup and parts as the Mitsubishi Colt. Produced at the Nedcar Factory in Holland alongside the Colt (and the Volvo 300 & Volvo s40), the ForFour aspired to have a lounge-like interior, but critics were extremely damning of its other attributes. Pricing and poor handling (for its class) were the main bones of contention; although it was praised for its modern styling and two-tone chassis.

2014 ushered in a new generation, but this time was a collaboration project with the French car manufacturer Renault. Sharing 70% of its makeup with the Twingo 3, the ForFour was built in Novo Mesto in Slovenia. As part of this generation, Smart created an electric and a battery electric version in 2017, produced and marketed in Europe it competed directly with MG’s ZS EV and, obviously, the Renault Twingo. In addition, the ForFour was constantly compared to both the Volkswagen E-Up and SEAT Mii.

Currently, the ForFour has the same pair of three-cylinder petrol engines as its sister car the ForTwo, a 1-liter liter and a 900cc turbocharged variant. Running costs are low, but it still doesn’t counter the inflated purchase price. Euro NCAP rated the ForFour 4 stars for overall safety with 78% for adult safety, 77% for passenger and 65% for pedestrian.
