About the Octavia

When you’re looking to buy an affordable family hatchback car, then your main priorities are likely to be adjectives like “safe” and “sensible,” right? This is part of the secret behind the success of the Skoda Octavia. Since its initial release in 1996, it has helped form the backbone of Skoda’s rejuvenation and rehabilitation as a reliable, safe, and desirable brand that can compete with its now corporate siblings at Volkswagen.

In each of its four generations, the Skoda Octavia has been presented as a 5-door liftback or a 5-door estate, both offering the kind of ideal mix of safety, comfort and space that makes an Octavia so ideal as a family car.

Many have compared the Octavia with the VW Passat, remarking on its similarities in dimension and exterior style. They’re not wrong, nor is it so surprising when you remember that Skoda is part of the VW family now. The latest-generation models are also built using the Volkswagen Group MQB Evo.

Powertrains include a host of petrol and diesel options from 1.0L to 2.0L displacement. There is also a plug-in hybrid and a gasoline mild-hybrid version to choose from as well, depending on which market you’re in.

Far from wanting to continue looking like a poor man’s Passat, Skoda has invested a lot into making the new Octavia as distinct as possible. It has new split front headlights, a new grille design, and new switchable driving modes. Skoda isn’t so generous with features on the entry-level model, however, so you have to climb the ladder to escape cheap plastics and a lack of features.

The Octavia is a comfortable highway cruiser, more so than it is a city car. With many opting for the larger engines of 1.4L and above, not to mention diesel options, it’s a car best suited to those who cover a lot of mileage in their regular driving year.
