About the Clubman

The Mini Clubman is a subcompact executive car, built in a wagon layout to offer families more utility than the regular Mini Hardtop (aka Mini Hatch). It was first launched back in 2007, and has since spawned 2 generations, the second being launched in 2015.

The idea for the Mini Clubman wasn’t entirely new, and not just in the sense that there are other station wagons out there, but that back in the 1960s, the Morris Mini Minor Traveller was released, and the name “Traveller” (using the UK spelling) became the go-to name for Mini wagon designs. This was changed to Clubman by BMW, since BMW had not purchased the rights to use the “Traveller” name.

From certain angles, you’d be forgiven for mistaking a Mini Clubman for a Mini Hardtop. The two were identical from the B-pillar forward, but the biggest difference was the extra 240mm in length, including 80mm extra for the wheelbase.

Another quite distinctive feature that set it apart was the bi-parting rear doors, sometimes known as split doors, or barn doors. At the time, Mini made a big deal about how much additional space there was, but in fact, the standard cargo area was only 9.2 cubic feet at first, going up to 32.8 cubic feet when the rear seats were folded.

In the latest versions, you can opt for the Cooper S Clubman All4 trim (from $33,750) that offers AWD to boost traction and on-road performance. Both trim levels also include LED headlights, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and power-adjustable side mirrors. The interior gets heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and keyless entry.

The interior quality is solid and distinctive, consistent with Mini’s brand for edgy and cool design. You won’t find cheap plastics, and the Clubman is blessed with a decent amount of space for both front- and rear-seat passengers.
