About the V-Class (Vito/Viano)

The Mercedes-Benz V-Class, also known as the Viano, or the Vito when in its cargo van form, is a large luxury minivan manufactured since it was first launched back in 1996. In the North American market, it is known as the Mercedes-Benz Metris in its cargo van form. The model has been manufactured by a number of different corporate groups as Mercedes-Benz has evolved over the years, and the model now covers a total of 3 generations.

First-generation V-Class models were quite boxy by modern standards, sharing a lot in common with a commercial van design in its exterior aesthetic. However, its gasoline engine still delivered up to 140hp, and its interior was far more comfortable, spacious and luxurious than the exterior suggested.

Through the generations, the V-Class was refined and modified to create the current third-gen models that were first launched in 2014. These are equipped either with a 2-liter gasoline engine, or one of four possible diesel powertrains, and now even an all-electric version that was launched in 2020.

The interior of the V-Class models is plush, comfortable and spacious, which for some gave rise to the idea that this van would be fairly slow and lacking in performance credentials. How wrong they were! In fact, the V-Class was praised by many prominent reviewers and other platforms for its power and pace despite its large size.

Interiors of the latest models include a floating 7-inch infotainment display as standard, rearrangeable rear seat configurations, heated front seats, three-zone climate control, a Burmester surround sound system, tinted rear windows, and a number of great safety and driver assistance features. These include hill start assist, cruise control, driver attention alerts, collision prevention and mitigation…the list goes on.

The V-Class continues to be built in Europe, Latin America and China where it enjoys popularity, but the North American Metris version is set to be discontinued in 2023.
