About the XJ

The XJ is an executive luxury saloon. It also happens to be the longest-running model in Jaguar's current lineup as it was first introduced in 1968.

Being a full-sized luxury saloon, the Jaguar XJ faces competition from many of the most luxurious contenders out there, like the Audi A8, BMW 7-Series, Cadillac CT6, and Mercedes-Benz S Class.

There has been an exceptionally wide array of XJ models. During its lifetime, there have been five main models of the XJ, beginning with the first-generation Series 1, 2, and 3, which ran between 1968 and 1992.

The second generation lasted between 1986 and 2003, being the XJ40, X300, and X308.

The modern era of the XJ models came with the release of the third-generation XJ350 in 2003 under Ford ownership.

This is when technology became more focused on bringing luxury and performance to users. Things like dual climate control became standard, as well as optional touch screens.

Today’s XJ models began in 2010 upon the release of the newest generation - known as the X351.

At this point, the XJ had received its most substantial restyling to date, now looking similar to other modern Jaguars. These are common Jaguar features like the sleeker aerodynamics and the iconic mesh grille found on vehicles like the F-Type and XF.

The number of engine configurations for the latest XJ includes a more modest 2-liter turbocharged Ford EcoBoost, right through to a powerful 5-liter supercharged V8.

There has also been a 3-liter Ford twin-turbocharged V6 model available.

A fully-electric replacement of the XJ was announced in 2019, but the project was soon canceled as it did not align with the company’s vision.
