About the Ridgeline

The Honda Ridgeline is a mid-sized pick-up truck and the only one in this category currently made by Honda, the other used to be the Acty mini truck. The Ridgeline uses a unibody frame, a transverse-mounted engine and all model variations come with a crew-cab short-box configuration.

The first generation went on sale in March 2005 and was both designed and engineered by team ‘Honda Research and Development’ led by Gary Flint. It took the team four years of development and experimentation to create what was essentially an extended version of the Acura MDX.

This Ridgeline was finally revealed as a Truck concept at the Northern American International Auto Show. The reason it took the development team from 2001 to 2005 to create this vehicle was that it used a unique platform, in fact, Honda stated that the Ridgeline only shared 7% of its components with other Honda vehicles. They had to ‘extensively calibrate and strengthen’ the chassis to allow for towing and hauling.

The second generation debuted in 2017 after a year’s hiatus. It remained a mid-sized Truck, but there had been many changes. Honda this time had used their global light truck platform to build off, a platform shared by the Pilot and other large vehicles. Honda extended the wheelbase and modified it for towing and hauling. This new model had a 17% stronger front structure and a 31% sturdier rear. Honda claims that 50% of the chassis components were strengthened.

The Drivers Seat TV dubbed the Ridgeline ‘the Swiss army knife of trucks,’ and that it scores ‘high on practicality and low on image.’ During its nearly two-decade run, the Ridgeway has achieved a number of awards, winning North American Car of the Year for 2006 & 2017, Canadian car of the year and Best new pick up for 2006, Motor Trends Truck of the year 2006 Popular Mechanics 2006 Automotive Excellence Award for Functionality.
