About the Pilot

The first thing to mention is that this is not the MG Pilot, the Honda Pilot is a completely different mid-size crossover MPV. Brought out in 2002, Honda had this vehicle in mind exclusively for Northern America, and specifically large families which explains the large 3-row seating.

Made in Lincoln Alabama now (previously Alliston Ontario until 2007), it shares its platform with the Acura MDX and the Odyssey Minivan. The Pilot has good handling due to its unibody making it drive more like a car than a minivan. It really seems as though Honda has prepared it for anything with its frame rails for towing and off-road capabilities. Its predecessor, the Passport was much more truck-like, meaning it was tough to handle but ultimately still a robust vehicle.

The first generation had the J35A4 all-aluminum 3.5-liter V6 engine which was changed just 3 years later in 2005.

The first Pilot was designed by Hondas Ricky Hsu for 8 passengers. Like the Zafira, it had 3 rows of seats, the back of which folded completely flat to allow for extra space for larger cargo. From 2006 there were fairly advanced additional extras to include a moonroof, DVD entertainment system and built-in satellite navigation. A facelift in 2006 meant an updated stylish facia and side airbags. To make the model more affordable and to appeal to a wider market, Honda created a 2-wheel drive.

The second generation came forward in 2009 following the debut of its prototype in 2008’s Northern Americas International Auto Show. There were 5 trims available, the LX, EX, EX-L, Touring and the SE.

In 2016, intelligent, automatic headlights were introduced along with 2 position memory driver seats, heated rear seats and a panoramic sunroof. On more exclusive models, Honda added lane switching and BSI (blind spot information).
