About the Odyssey

The Honda Odyssey is a minivan that began sales in 1994. Currently, in its 5th generation, the Odyssey has enjoyed good worldwide sales. It was conceived and engineered originally in Japan in the wake of the country’s economic crisis of the 1990s. This heavily influenced the design and size of the vehicle meaning a much smaller minivan was produced (sitting in the compact MPV class).

This Odyssey model was received well in the domestic market but was deemed too small for America. It was sold under the name ‘Honda Shuttle’ in Europe. In a bid to appeal more to the American market, Honda eventually built their plant in Lincoln, Alabama.

The first generation debuted in 1994 and was essentially a raised wagon based on the Accord Sedan. Available in four-wheel drive with a 3.0-liter V6 engine from 1997, it came with dual-air conditioning (different temperatures set for both front and back seats).

In 1995, the Odyssey won the Automotive Researchers and Journalists Conference car of the year award in Japan. In its home market, the main competition for this vehicle came from the Toyota Gaia, Toyota Ipsum and the Nissan Bassara.

The second generation was larger as a conscious effort was made to appeal to the American Market. This newer model enjoyed a major upgrade rather than building off a new platform, this made it look quite similar to the original style. Honda decided upon a whole new redesign for their third generation, perhaps to reflect the car's new features. They kept the 5 door makeup but made it look sleeker, lower and more car-like. Crise control was added on the JDM Odyssey, a new folding seat mechanism was introduced and the V6 dropped.

The fourth generation's biggest change was the introduction of electronic stability control and standard curtain airbags on all grades. A fifth generation was first showcased at the Shanghai Motor Show, with initial advertising taking place online. Aside from the modernized look, the hinged doors were finally replaced with power sliding doors.
