About the Sandero

In the densely populated automotive segment of the subcompact and/or supermini hatchback cars, the Dacia Sandero perhaps best represents the “value” sub-segment. With starting prices at around $17,000, it’s hard to find a car of the same scale and quality at a lower price. The fourth-generation models are expected to offer an even cheaper base-level price when they arrive.

The Sandero has so far journeyed through 3 generations, the latest of which arrived in 2020. Powertrains, as with many Dacia models, are limited to 1.0L gasoline engines, with no diesel option in the latest models. The elimination of diesel models has become an increasingly common sight even with European OEMs which have always found success with them in the past.

High-end features in the current Sandero include electric power steering, LED headlights, blind-spot warning systems, parking assistance with front and rear sensors, keyless entry and start, heated front seats, an 8-inch infotainment system, and full compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Although prominent TV shows like the UK’s Top Gear have attempted over and over to pan and ridicule the Dacia Sandero, even their indomitable hosts begrudgingly admit to its advantages as an affordable car, even if it's not the fanciest. Then again, to criticize this car for lack of luxury is silly since neither Dacia nor parent Renault market it as such.

British motoring magazine “What Car?” awarded the second-generation Sandero model the title of “Best Supermini Less than £12,000.” They even added the compliment, “it offers something genuinely new and different in that it brings real space for bargain prices.” It received this award in 2013, 2014, and 2015.

Finally, the Dacia Sandero offers strong safety scores, achieving a solid 4 out of 5 stars from Euro NCAP, including 5-star ratings for adult and child occupants, proving that one needn’t sacrifice safety for budget-friendliness.
